A Kelowna Mountie has won praise from his detachment after going above and beyond the call of duty.

Cst. Nathan Nickel was enjoying a day off with his family in Lake Country last week when he came upon a fellow officer in what police described as a “difficult situation.”

An “agitated” suspect was being uncooperative, the RCMP explained.

Cst. Nickel didn’t wait around to see what would happen.

He parked his vehicle, secured his wife and child and ran up a hill to assist in a takedown.

It was all captured on video, too, courtesy of his wife.

Her conversation with the couple’s child provides a rare and poignant insight into the life of a police family, with the youngster asking: “Where is Daddy running there?”

Cst. Nickel’s wife answers that “Daddy’s going to help the other police officer right now,” later adding: “Oh, jeepers, please don’t get hurt, Nath.”

Police did not release any more details about the Nov. 1 incident, but said Cst. Nickel’s actions show officers “are always on duty.”

“Fortunately, Cst. Nickel was in the area and able to assist, going above and beyond to help a fellow officer,” said Sgt. Desmond Kiehlbauch.

"The video was provided by a fellow officer after they heard about his action."
