Meat lovers at the kickoff of Kelowna’s Rib Fest appeared mostly bemused as a group of approximately 15 animal rights advocates marched through the City Park event with signs Friday afternoon.

“We’re here to speak up for the animals in a super positive way because we think that most people here are good people but they just honestly don't understand what their food goes through,” said demonstrator Olivia Gordey.

“The goal is to raise awareness, so we brought our pet pig CeCe with us and we just want people to make the connection.”

The group’s mascot CeCe was eventually removed from the animal free event but the demonstrators marched through the park and set up in an open area where they interacted with attendees and security.

The animal rights advocacy group said they would prefer to see Rib Fest hosted behind closed doors.

“The reaction has actually been ok." said Gordey. “We expected people to tell us CeCe looks tasty or whatever and honestly those type of people are the ones you have to feel a little bit bad for because they are a victim of our society and tradition.”

Rib Fest is scheduled to run throughout the weekend in Kelowna’s City Park.
