Get ready to give back, Kelowna, the annual BC Thanksgiving Food Drive (BCTFD) in support of the Central Okanagan Food Bank has officially kicked off.

What started as a small food drive in Burnaby back in 2009 has since grown to include over 50 cities in BC and their community food banks, including the one right here in Kelowna.

The food drive asks residents to lend a hand in stocking the facility’s shelves ahead of the approaching holiday season, the busiest time of year for the CO Food Bank.

Over the week, volunteers will be dropping off informational leaflets at homes around the city, asking for non-perishable food donations to be left on doorsteps by 9:30 am on Saturday, Sept. 21.

All donations are graciously accepted but some key items are always needed, including dried pasta, canned fruit, vegetables and meat, along with soups and baby items.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, traditional dinner items such as stuffing, cranberry sauce, green beans and gravy are also a great donation idea.

On Saturday, an army of volunteers will scatter across the city to collect the donations and transport them to the food bank where they will be sorted and then used to replenish the shelves.

Donation bins will also be present at various local businesses, grocery stores and apartment buildings if you wish to contribute that way. Monetary donations can also be made through the food bank’s website.
