Bike thefts are down, but the City of Kelowna is still encouraging cyclists to take extra measures to keep their property safe.
There have been 115 bikes reported stolen in Kelowna since the start of the calendar year, down 26.8% from the 157 reported stolen in the same period of 2015.
“We’d like to see the numbers drop even more,” says Colleen Cornock, the City’s crime prevention supervisor. “It can only work with us continuing to work with the community to keep property safe.”
One helpful took to keep your bike safe, suggested by Cornock, is Project 529 Garage.
The North America-wide app is a community based bike registration and recovery process, which gives any cyclist more peace of mind.
If a bike is stolen, the database makes it easier for the RCMP to return bikes to their owner when it’s recovered in a separate investigation.
By registering, cyclists also have all the information they need for insurance claims.

There’s currently over 2,000 bikes registered with the program in this region.
Always report a stolen bike to the RCMP and if you see your stolen bike for sale online, contact the RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-762-3300.
Work with the police to figure out a plan to get your bike back, never attempt to recover a stolen bike without police involvement.
