Blast from the past: Exhibit on ‘Kelowna’s Amusing Past’ looks at bygone sites and festivals
The Okanagan Heritage Museum has opened it’s latest temporary exhibit, which explores all the ways Kelowna used to keep itself entertained.
Kelowna’s Amusing Past takes a look at the drive-in theatres, roller rinks, regattas, snowfest, rodeos, parades, zoos, and amusement parks that helped the community build a reputation as a tourist destination.
According to Kelowna Museums, tourism ads from the time billed the city as “the fun capital of Canada!!”
“Kelowna’s Amusing Past takes a light-hearted look at some of the city’s bygone amusement sites and annual festivals that brought the community together,” said the museum. “The gallery space comes to life through archival photos, videos and objects, including prehistoric mascots (yabba dabba doooo!), arcade games, memorabilia and a whole lot more.”
“Come and learn about the Regatta rioters, Snogo, Myta the Smoking Chimp and Kelowna’s very own Walt Disney (with a hint of Bob Ross),” they added.
Learn what became of these special spaces and characters!
An opening celebration is being held on Aug. 21, 2019 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will include carnival snacks, games, magic and “local royalty.”
The exhibit runs from Aug. 17, 2019, to Nov. 18, 2019, at the Okanagan Heritage Museum, 470 Queensway Ave.
