A Christmas tradition is set to return to Kelowna starting tomorrow.
Candy Cane Lane is going ahead this season, giving locals a Christmas event to look forward to amid the pandemic.
Every year, close to 70 homes in Rutland will put up elaborate decorations, lights and displays for the community to enjoy as they walk or drive down the route.
Candy Cane Lane takes place along Collison Road, Gramiak Road and Mary Court, which come together to form a giant candy cane.
Organizer John Sharhon says that the street is looking to go all out in order to end the year on a positive note.
“We’ll see if the guys up on the space station can see us,” he says.
“The one thing that’s been consistent this year is inconsistency. To end the year with something normal that hasn't changed is really important.”
The light up will commence on December 1 until January 1, and most houses will have their displays on from 5 pm to 10 pm.
Sharhon adds that usually there are extra lights that don’t get put up, but this year they’ll be trying to find a spot for all of them.
And, the organizers of the Grenfell Haunted House and this year's Halloween parade are putting on a Santa parade that will visit Candy Cane Lane on December 19.
Although Candy Cane Lane is promising to shine brighter than ever before, there will be a few missing elements.
Santa Claus will still be visiting all the children of the world on Christmas, but unfortunately he won’t be able to make it to Rutland for a visit and photos during the month long event.
The party that is typically held at the end of the month for all of the neighbours has also been cancelled.
People should also follow the directions of the Provincial Health Officer when it comes to large gatherings and social distancing.
The event is completely free, although if you visit the light up you’re encouraged to leave a non-perishable food item in the donation bin for local charities and programs.
Last year, organizers delivered 12,000 lbs of food donated by the community to local shelters.
