A major change to Kelowna’s new short term regulations could be approved by city council on Tuesday night.
The public hearing beginning at 6 p.m. at City Hall, will consider a text amendment to current regulations that will permit carriage homes and secondary suites into the short term rental pool.
In March, city council approved Kelowna's short term rental regulations, but decided not to allow carriage homes and secondary suites as an option to services such as Airbnb.
However, following a public push back, council decided to forward text amendment allowing carriage homes and secondary suites into the short term rental pool.
The amendment proposes the following conditions:
- The short-term rental operator must have their principal residence on that property, as either the tenant of the secondary suite or carriage house, or the resident of the main house;
- One short-term rental operation is allowed per property for single dwelling housing;
- A maximum of two bedrooms can be used for short-term rentals in a secondary suite or carriage house;
- One parking space is required.
According to a staff report, 63% of respondents to a local survey supported using secondary suites & carriage houses for short-term rentals.
That same report highlighted approving the text amendment would make 2,247 legal suites & carriage houses in Kelowna available for short term rentals.
Kelowna residents hoping to operate a short term rental can apply for a business license up until July 1.
