On Monday, Kelowna city council will consider multiple changes to the city's business license application and renewal process.

According to the City of Kelowna's Business Licence Manager Greg Wise, the current system has only received minor updates since it was first implemented over 20 years ago.

Multiple updates are being proposed by the City of Kelowna, including $25 fee for new applicants as well as a $25 late fee for businesses that miss the annual renewal deadline.

Those new fees are in line with comparable cities, Vancouver charges a $58 application fee, while Vernon charges between $25 and $100.

The City of Kelowna will also look to nearly 1,900 unclassified licenses into more specific categories.

“These changes are the first step to modernizing our business licence system,” said Wise.

“This fall we anticipate moving to a new online platform that will allow for much easier functionality including e-billing options, applying and paying online and more.

Approximately 9,500 active business licenses are currently registered in Kelowna.
