Sadly, it’s that time of year again.
Pool season is winding down as we have less than two weeks left than summer and the days are starting to get shorter and cooler.
If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard pool, the City of Kelowna is urging you, as always, to empty it properly as protecting Okanagan Lake from improper pool draining methods is essential.
When you go to drain your pool or hot tub, you’re reminded to:
- To drain to a dry area on their property over a long period of time, ensuring water stays on the property
- To discharge the water at a low flow rate
- To stop draining if it starts raining or the ground becomes saturated
- Water should be dechlorinated before being drained into the storm sewer system
- Saltwater pools should be drained into the sanitary sewer system
There are bylaws in place that restrict the draining of residential pool and hot tub water into storm drains if it contains disinfectants like chlorine, salt water and bromine.
If proper drainage is not possible, the water must be dechlorinated before being drained into the storm sewer system,” says a release from the City of Kelowna.

Improper discharge of contaminated water can result in a fine of up to $2,000.
