The co-founder of Great Big Sea is set to perform his solo show celebrating Irish music in May.
Canadian singer-songwriter Séan McCann will be taking the Mary Irwin Theatre stage at the Rotary Centre for the Arts on May 10 at 7:30 pm.
McCann’s show features a blend of Celtic-infused tunes from his latest album, Shantyman, and some beloved Irish classics.
“His remarkable talent and passion for music, combined with his inspiring philanthropic work, make him a true Canadian icon,” says Colleen Fitzpatrick, the executive director of RCA.
“We feel privileged to have him grace our stage and share his uplifting music with our community."
Shantyman is McCann’s sixth solo album and his first release since 2017.
The album incorporates the expected rhythms and sounds of Celtic bodhrans and tin whistles, as well as a variety of other instruments played by McCann's friends, such as J.P. Cormier, Jeremy Fisher, Hawksley Workman, and Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar.
In 2017, McCann organized a benefit with Fisher, Joel Plaskett and Sarah Harmer to purchase guitars for veterans who are struggling with PTSD and other mental health issues.
His contributions to mental health advocacy led to his appointment to the Order of Canada in 2019.
In addition, he and his wife co-wrote One Good Reason: A Memoir of Addiction and Recovery, which was published in 2020.
This performance in Kelowna is part of his current tour, which includes over 40 shows across Canada.
