A fatal collision between a motorcycle and a pickup truck occurred Wednesday evening in West Kelowna and is currently under investigation.

On July 26th at 9:19 pm, West Kelowna RCMP responded to a call about a collision between a motorcycle and a pickup truck at the intersection of Highway 97 and Elk Road in West Kelowna.

The collision occurred when a grey Suzuki motorcycle heading north on HWY 97 was struck by a red Dodge Dakota pickup truck, completing a left turn from the southbound lanes of Highway 97 eastbound onto Elk Road.

The 37-year-old West Kelowna male riding the motorcycle was rushed to hospital in grave condition and was later pronounced deceased in hospital.

The driver of the Dodge pickup truck was treated at the scene for minor injuries as a result of the collision.

A portion of the highway closed for several hours while RCMP collision analysts conducted an examination of the crash scene. During that time, traffic was diverted around the scene.

"Exact causal factors are not yet known, however early indicators from witness accounts suggest that the speeds at which the motorcyclist was travelling may have been a factor," stated Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghet with the Kelowna RCMP.

The West Kelowna RCMP, the RCMP Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Services are continuing in assisting the BC Coroners Service in the ongoing investigation.

If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police, please contact the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
