The Regional District of Central Okanagan is warning Kelowna residents about cougar activity near the Crawford area.
According to a release from the RDCO, there have been cougar sightings in Woodhaven Nature Conservancy Regional Park.
All information has been passed along to the BC Conservation Officer Service.
The park is a popular 30-hectare wooded area with a trail system that’s popular with residents in the area.
Although human conflicts with cougars are rare and an attack is unlikely, any visitors to the area are encouraged to be prepared because the large cats are unpredictable.
“People should travel in groups of two or more and that you make enough noise so that you don’t surprise a cougar,” says information posted to the Ministry of Environment’s website.
“Carry a sturdy walking stick that can be used as a weapon if necessary and keep children and pets close at hand and under control.”
If you do encounter a cougar, you should stay calm, talk to it in a confident voice, pick up all children off the ground and never turn your back on the animal.
Back away slowly while remaining upright and do everything you can to make yourself look larger.
Be sure to give the cougar an avenue of escape as well.
The RDCO also reminds all park visitors that dogs must be leash at all times and remain on designated trails.
