If you’ve wandered around downtown Kelowna in recent days, you may have noticed a smashed up car near the Queensway bus exchange.
Don’t worry, there wasn’t a major accident downtown, as it’s a display courtesy of the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
The display is part of the organization’s annual campaign to prevent impaired driving, which the local chapter’s president says is all too common at this time of year.
“Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, we fear people will continue to participate in parties and celebrations,” Laura Garcia explained.
“MADD Okanagan is encouraging people to plan in advance, be responsible and stay safe. Just don’t drive impaired.
Those thoughts are echoed by Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran.
“The display dramatically delivers the message that we need to make sure we have a plan to get home safely before going out during the festive season,” said Basran.
“Let’s all be careful out there this winter and keep our friends and family safe.”
The display will move to other locations in Kelowna and West Kelowna in the coming weeks before being taken down on Jan. 15, 2021.
Impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada.
