Kelowna's homeless population includes a variety of people with different backgrounds, and one woman's story has prompted a well-known advocacy group to try to help out.

A GoFundMe page has been started for Faye, a Kelowna woman living in the homeless shelter with her two dogs.

Pets OK BC co-founder and organizer Eliot Galan said they started the campaign after they heard Faye’s “heartbreaking” story.

Galan says he hopes to raise at least $2,000 in the next two weeks and then give Faye the funds directly. He’s hoping the money will help her find a secure place to live and get her back on her feet.

A senior living on the streets, Faye’s two dogs Boo and Bear are like her children and she couldn’t imagine getting rid of them. Luckily, the shelter allows pets so she hasn’t had to part with them yet but she is moving on due to some challenges.

Pets OK BC is in contact with her about her situation, but in the tight rental market, having her two dogs makes her housing prospects dim. Despite this, Faye says she will not give them up as she doesn’t have much left.

Faye lost her home to a fire in Grand Forks, and her husband passed away recently. She then lost her vehicles, but was able to get a ride to Kelowna.

“These are my family. These are my children. Without them, I’d be pretty lonesome,” Faye told Kent Molgat, journalist for NowMedia.

“We want to do everything we can to help her get enough money together for a security deposit and pet deposit for a new place to live. She's a senior and pensioner, and deserves to keep her family together,” says the GoFundMe page.

All money raised will be personally delivered to Faye at the end of this month. Click here to contribute to the funding page.
