A rezoning application for a proposed daycare has been submitted at Kelowna city hall.

The applicants are looking to just add the child care centre, major subzone onto the property’s existing RU1 – Large Lot Housing zoning.

According to the applicant’s letter of rationale, she has been working in childcare for over two and a half years and is a fully certified early childhood educator.

“We are building onto our family home of over twenty years turning it into a duplex,” the application says.

“Me and my family will be moving into the new house at 285 Merrifield rd and now that I have the opportunity I would like to open my own child care facility in the old house at 295 Merrifield Rd.”

The applicant says the property is close to the Rutland YMCA, the Rutland sports fields and hockey arena and several schools for children to transition into after being in her proposed centre.

The applicant says they have contacted Interior Health licensing officers.

There is no indication of how many spaces the centre would have but more details will be brought forward in a staff report to city council.

This rezoning has been circulated around the city’s planning department and a report will be brought forward to council at a future date.
