Did you know that there are over 240 species of birds in your backyard?

From mountain lakes and grassland meadows, canyons to pine forests, and lakeshore habitats to streams, our community has some great birdwatching areas to explore in West Kelowna and the Greater Westside and right now is one of the best times to see these feathered friends.

In anticipation of the birds making their spring migration back to the Okanagan, we teamed up with Visit Westside to present you with a birdwatching brochure so you can discover nature's tweets this spring.

Downable here, this Birding Map & Guide will take you into the forest, along the waterfront and hopefully, onto the patios of some nearby West Kelowna eateries. You can always elect to order takeout, too. A picnic would be a great way to enjoy an entire day of family fun on the Westside.

Being a birder is free, and most trails are both wheelchair and stroller accessible, too. For your kids, they'll love looking for the colours fluttering through the sky while they call out the names they learned in the brochure. "Look, mom! There's the smallest bird in North America, a Calliope Hummingbird!"

The Birding Map & Guide will also help your little ones learn special tidbits about the birds. Watch their eyes light up as they spot the bird singing a wonderful melody in West Kelowna. They may even come across some rarities that include the Black Swiss Bird, who only lays one egg.

This adventure in nature will challenge your senses and soften your steps, as you'll discover that you'll hear the bird well before you see it. To learn more about the area, trails and birdwatching, click here

It's for those who appreciate nature, the outdoors, hiking and good old-fashioned family fun, birding on the Westside is a great way to get outdoors for a safe activity where you'll even improve your well-being while you walk in the forest or along the waterfront.

Now download the Birding Map & Guide or pick up a hard copy at the West Kelowna or Kelowna Visitor Centres and go have some fun.
