A popular winter event in Kelowna has been cancelled due to COVID-19.
The Winter Street Market, which has been put on for the last three years by the Downtown Kelowna Association, won’t happen in 2020.
The single-day event was scheduled to be held on the first weekend of December, transforming the area around Stuart Park into a winter wonderland.
A diverse group of vendors would line Water Street and activities included skating on the outdoor rink, visits with Santa Claus and live entertainment.
It would all wrap up with the official lighting of the tree next to the Stuart Park rink in the evening.
"Current public health orders include the prohibition of any event that would create a gathering of 50 or more persons,” said a statement from the DKA.
“The Winter Street Market attendance figures have grown each year to a point of over 10,000 people over the course of the one-day event.”
The DKA says its top priority at this time is the health and safety of its staff and everyone who visits the city’s downtown core, which makes the 2020 Winter Street Market impossible this year.
As of now, the plan is for the event to return in 2021.
