Interior Health has issued a drug alert that will be in effect until June 1 for illicit drug users in Kelowna.

A substance being sold as down has high concentrations of fentanyl and benzodiazepines.

The black chunks contain 60-65% fentanyl and 20-25% bromazolam.

Users are at a very high risk of overdose and a high risk of fatal overdose, and an overdose may not respond to naloxone.

Other risks include amnesia, sleepiness and nodding out for a long time.

Interior Health is reminding users that smoking is not safer than injecting.

If a user thinks they have this substance, it is recommended to get it drug tested.

For those using, it is also encouraged to start with a very small amount with others around or at an Overdose Prevention Site.
