(UPDATE: May 25 @ 12:45 pm) - The Kelowna RCMP continues to investigate a fatal collision between a cyclist and vehicle on Hwy 97 Tuesday morning.
Police have now confirmed that the cyclist who died in the crash was a 70-year-old man from Lake Country.
The initial investigation learned that the man was trying to cross Hwy 97, near Parkinson Road, from west to east during morning rush hour traffic.
He was hit by a Honda Fit travelling northbound, the RCMP explained, and sadly succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
"Our thoughts are with the victim's family at this difficult time," an RCMP release said.
The Southeast Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended the scene on Tuesday and assisted with the investigation.
A portion of the highway was closed for multiple hours while officers conducted an investigation, but it fully reopened to traffic around 10 am.
(Original story: May 24 @ 8:40 am) - An early-morning collision in Kelowna between a cyclist and vehicle has claimed a life.
The RCMP was called to the scene at Hwy 97 and Old Vernon Road shortly before 7 am today.
No further details have been provided on the collision other than the fact that it was fatal.
Social media posts claim that the cyclist was killed in the collision and that the accident happened north of Old Vernon Road around Ellison Lake.
Police have closed the intersection down to one lane in all directions until further notice.
Traffic control personnel are on scene to assist, but expect delays in the area.
“The RCMP are requesting that motorists and pedestrians avoid the intersection during this time and will provide an update as soon as details are available,” explained an RCMP release.
Anyone who witnessed this collision, or has relevant dash cam footage from the area around that time, is urged to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
