One man was arrested and another was sent to hospital following a stabbing outside Orchard Park Mall on Sunday.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 3 pm after receiving a report of the assault and responding officers found the 37-year-old male victim bleeding from a serious stab wound to his leg.

Paramedics rushed him to hospital and advised police that the injury was so severe, he would have bled to death if not for the quick response of several bystanders who stepped in to provide medical aid.

According to RCMP, the victim remains in hospital where he continues his recovery.

After canvassing witnesses at the scene, officers determined that a group of men had been in a fight with the victim, which led to the stabbing.

Four suspects fled in various directions on bikes after the incident, but surveillance footage from the scene provided officers with a clear description of the primary suspect.

Around 30 minutes later, the man was found and arrested for aggravated assault.

“The quick response by officers of the Kelowna RCMP resulted in the arrest of the suspect and we are extremely grateful for those citizens who stepped in to assist the victim which possibly saved his life,” said Cst. Mike Della-Paolera.

The suspect has been released from custody with several conditions and is due in court at a later date.
