A large group gathered outside Kelowna City Hall on Friday afternoon as part of Global Climate Strike action taking place across the world.

Strikes are being organized globally between Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 in over 150 countries, where people are being asked to support young climate demonstrators in demanding an end to the age of fossil fuels.

The Kelowna protest saw over a hundred people in attendance spanning several demographics, many toting homemade signs with messages like “Please don’t make my grandchildren an endangered species” and “Planet over profit.”

Demonstrators received ample backing from those passing by, even with a hint of irony as cars honked their horns in support.

The protest featured speeches from Central Okanagan Green Party candidate Robert Mellalieu as well as NDP candidate Joan Phillips.

After gathering at City Hall, the demonstrators marched through the downtown core

Inspired by 16-year-old Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg, similar strikes were staged across the globe from New York to Antartica.

A second climate strike will be held in Kelowna next Friday, Sept. 27, in solidarity as Thunberg brings climate change activism message to Montreal.
