The Kelowna community is rallying around one of its own.

Devon Loy is fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit of Kelowna General Hospital after a serious car accident during the early hours of Monday morning.

Loy was the passenger in a vehicle that collided with a lamp standard at the intersection of Harvey Avenue and Banks Road.

The driver, a 26-year-old Kelowna man, failed a breathalyzer at the scene and provided more samples of his breath in excess of the legal limit once he was brought into custody.

While he escaped the crash without any serious injuries, Loy wasn’t so lucky and has been placed into a medically induced coma at KGH.

Her injuries are considered life threatening in nature.

A GoFundMe has now been created for Loy in an effort to relieve some of the financial burdens she'll face while recovering from the accident.

“Devon has an extremely long road to recovery and ICBC will take a while to get things sorted, but unfortunately the bills don’t stop,” wrote Brittany Torjusson, the creator of the GoFundMe.

“Her rent and bills will still need to be paid, but she is going to be in the hospital for a long while.”

Torjusson said that any donation would help relieve the financial stress of “an already horrible situation.”

“If you know (Devon), she is selfless, kind, always smiling and would do anything for anyone,” Torjusson explained. “Now she needs our help.”

As of Monday afternoon, the driver was still in police custody facing a number of potential charges and driving prohibitions.
