The fight against COVID-19 is testing healthcare systems everywhere, and a shortage of medical supplies and protective equipment is a concern being shared by professionals at Kelowna General Hospital.
According to healthcare workers, there is a major need for donated supplies like masks, safety goggles, face shields, gowns and gloves.
“It has been terrifying going to work, knowing we are not properly being protected,” said a nurse working at KGH, who wishes not to be named.
She added that they are being told to wear the same mask for a 12-hour shift, and to reuse and wipe down face shields, as they are quickly running out.
Healthcare workers are now trying to get the message out there that they need donations of supplies such as safety glasses from businesses like dental offices, trades companies, schools and beauty salons.
“I spent yesterday getting safety goggles donated and delivered to my co-workers. All it took was one quick message and people were more than willing,” the nurse explained. “They had no idea we needed these items.”
