Kelowna has its first indoor vertical aeroponic garden, and its grand opening event is on Sunday, June 4, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Vertical Greens Kelowna, owned by Ilona Morrison, offers chemical-free greens, seedlings and seeds for purchase, as well as education for the tower garden technology.

“I wanted to share the tower technology on a bigger scale than what I’ve been doing the past few years,” Morrison explained. “It was time.”

“I think people are more open to it now and they’re understanding the importance of growing their own food.”

The tower garden aeroponic technology takes up 90% less space, uses 90% less water and produces three times faster than a traditional soil garden.

Because no soil is used, there is no weeding, fertilizing or tilling needed, and the towers are self-watering.

“I feel like most people who ask me about tower gardens tell me they’re not a gardener and they have no idea how to grow food, and I just want to encourage them,” Morrison said.

“If you’re not a gardener, I am your person to teach you how to become a tower gardener because it’s really simple.”

Morrison has been using tower gardens for the past eight years.

“I was inspired to start Vertical Greens Kelowna because one of my really good friends in Quebec started Tower Garden Farm,” she explained, adding that they both aspire to fill their respective city with the technology.

“This is as local and organic as you can ever get.”

Vertical Greens Kelowna, located at 17 - 737 Stremel Rd, is open by appointment only. Anyone interested in stopping by can contact Morrison through social media or by phone at (250) 864-9136.

Sunday’s grand opening event will include coffee, refreshments and a silent auction in support of Mamas for Mamas.
