It’s been a long road to this point, but ground will finally be broken on JoeAnna’s House next week.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday morning at the future site of JoeAnna’s House, the corner of Royal Avenue and Abbott Street.

Once built, the house will act as a home away from home for families that need to travel to Kelowna while a loved one receives life-saving specialist care at Kelowna General Hospital.

Thousands of families are forced to do so every year and the lack of affordable short-term accommodation in Kelowna can make the experience even harder.

JoeAnna’s House will take care of their accommodation so that these families can look after themselves and be there for their loved ones.

“Research shows that patients heal better when surrounded by their loved ones,” says the JoeAnna’s House website. “They get better when together.”

More than $8-million has been raised to fund the construction of JoeAnna’s House, which was announced just over a year ago.

The project is named after the late Joe and Anna Huber by their family members, who put up the first $1 million towards the house’s construction.
