Kelowna City Council approved a licence fee schedule for prospective cannabis retailers.
The fee schedule is meant to “address community impacts arising from the development of a cannabis retail sales process.”
It also addresses the review of each application, its licensing approvals, and helping to offset projected community enforcement impacts of consumption.
An annual business licence for a retail sales establishment will cost $9,465, with an $8,000 renewal fee in addition to the rezoning application fee of $9,450.
City council looked at some best practices that are already being implemented in parts of the United States, where Cannabis is currently being sold legally. Key areas of regulation included a limited number of licences per person, a requirement of liability insurance, a criminal record check, and defined allowed zoning districts.
City staff proposed four business category types, including a cannabis counselling establishment, a cannabis-related business, a retail cannabis sales establishment, and a retail store (cannabis accessory sales).
