By the beginning of the new school year, Kelowna will have a new establishment equipped to help youth who need it most in our community.
Foundry is a unique and innovative space that will house more than 20 mental health and social organizations working to transform the way youth and families gain access to the support they need in our community.
From healthcare practitioners to social workers, professionals will be on site to help with medical and social services, such as housing and employment. The Foundry will become a go-to location for youth and young adults aged 12-24 years, who seek answers to a variety of issues.
Construction is now complete and the desks are starting to be filled with staff and supplies. Foundry will be ready to open its doors to the community by early fall. KelownaNow visited the integrative space to learn more about how it started and how it aims to impact our community.
We met with CMHA Kelowna representative, Mike Gawliuk and Evolve Design owner, Jules Galloway.
With nine rooms for client consultations, a family meeting room, and three identical medical rooms, the spaces maintain an atmosphere of flexibility, confidentiality and convenience.
Gawliuk describes the space as "transformative" as different elements were used by the Evolve team to help make the space both comfortable and functional. Easy-to-close room dividers have been added to larger rooms to help better equip the Foundry for different situations.
Mobile room booking systems and fob-triggered alarm systems will help to ensure the space is used safely and effectively without interruption.
Foundry is also equipped with a working kitchen and recreation room where clients can spend time learning valuable life skills as well as socializing.
The new community asset will offer walk-in hours that will not interfere with school hours, ensuring help is readily available for youth who need it, all the while offering a comfortable and welcoming space.
