For over 40 years Kelowna’s Gospel Mission (KGM) has been providing food, clothing, and shelter to the most fragile and at-risk persons in our community.
After recently eliminating 2 oz condiment containers and laundry pods, the multiservice agency is aimed at going green.
During lunch hours, KGM provides residents with a nutritious meal and the option to enjoy a bowl of homemade soup.
As KGM reports, there are almost always leftovers. Which end up being dispensed into styrofoam bowls in the fridge.
On average there can be 10-20 styrofoam containers that get thrown out the next day because they don’t get eaten, which is proving to create a lot of waste.
Styrofoam containers can be worse than plastic, as it’s estimated it takes about 500 years for one single-use Styrofoam to decompose.
With their sights set on not only helping the community but the environment, they’re moving away from the dreadful foamy containers.
Instead, the Outreach Team will be bringing along sanitized 7.5 L food-safe containers with the soups and sandwiches they already provide, and whatever soup isn’t eaten will be poured into these environmentally friendly containers.
Now, if the residents want soup after lunch hours, Kelowna Gospel Mission staff will be able to grab a bowl and pour some out from the 7.5 L container.
It’s just one of the many steps this organization is taking to move towards a greener future.
