(UPDATE: March 19 @ 2:05 pm) – Friends of the victim of a violent assault have rallied together after he was injured at a bus stop on Friday night.
On Friday, at about 10:30 pm, Kelowna RCMP officers responded to a bus stop off Highway 97, near McCurdy where they found a young man lying on the ground.
Gagandeep Singh, an international student living in Kelowna, has been identified as the victim through a GoFundMe set up by his friends.
According to Adam Wilson, Singh suffered injuries to his chest, mouth, arms and legs after he was attacked when exiting the bus.
Earlier on Sunday, Cst. Mike Della-Paolera Media Relations Officer with the Kelowna RCMP said Singh had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance for treatment for his injuries.
Singh is now recovering at home.
Cst. Della-Paolera said the investigation into these types of assaults are a “top priority” for the Kelowna RCMP.
Wilson says Singh is an international student and will have some medical bills to cover plus his rent and tuition.
“Kelowna is a welcoming and diverse community, filled with residents who are full of love and compassion. Together we can show that there's no place for hate and violence in our community,” writes Wilson.
As of Sunday afternoon, the investigation continues and the Kelowna RCMP are still requesting for witness to contact them at (250) 762-3300.
(Original story: March 19 @ 11:56 am) – Kelowna Mounties are investigating an assault that started on a city bus late Friday night.
A news release says officers responded to a report of a male that had been assaulted at a bus stop off Highway 97, near McCurdy Road. The incident happened shortly after 10:30 pm.
When officers arrived they found the victim lying on the ground and his friends had already arrived to help him.
Officers were told that a group of people were allegedly teasing the victim and when he left the bus, he was hit from behind and assaulted.
The victim had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
“The Kelowna RCMP take this very seriously and are concerned that this type of crime has happened in our city. This assault is the top priority for our investigators,” said Cst. Mike Della-Paolera Media Relations Officer with the Kelowna RCMP.
