The Kelowna RCMP has filled six new positions on its Community Safety Unit (CSU) just in time for summer.

There are now 27 officers dedicated to the CSU, which performs high-visibility uniformed patrols in the city’s public spaces, fostering relationships with the community and taking enforcement action when needed.

“These dedicated officers will be working closely with our partners, including the City of Kelowna, Interior Health and the BC Prosecution Service, to address some of the multifaceted issues that face our community,” explained Supt. Kara Triance.

“Our close working ties allow us to come together as a team to find long term solutions to the issues of public disorder, property crime, mental health and substance abuse.”

Triance added that addressing these problems brings a sense of well-being back into the city’s downtown area and allows all community members to feel safe while enjoying various parts of Kelowna.

Mayor Colin Basran said that it’s an exciting announcement for Kelowna.

“Six new officers is a substantial increase and we expect the enhanced police visibility and responsiveness they will bring to priority areas of the city will impact crime and sense of safety,” he said.

Staff Sgt. Hunter has been appointed as command of the CSU and he’ll be responsible for a wide array of teams focused on social order issues, safety and property crime.

He’ll oversee the foot and bike patrol teams, youth officers, the Police and Crisis Team, the Crime Reduction Unit and Integrated Policing Team.
