Kelowna RCMP officer under investigation for allegedly shooting man at homeless camp

A Kelowna RCMP officer is under investigation after a firearm was discharged, sending one male to the hospital.

On Thursday, August 3rd, at about 12:30 p.m. a Kelowna RCMP Officer was dispatched to assist a Kelowna City Bylaw Officer, in attending to a complaint of a homeless camp, on Duck Lake 7.

Upon arrival, the officers were approached by a male camper who is alleged to have produced a knife.

The officers on scene reported having tried to de-escalate the situation, but were unsuccessful.

The Kelowna RCMP officer allegedly discharged their firearm and hit the male.

The RCMP officer is now under investigation.

The male with the knife was arrested and taken to hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.

Neither of the officers were injured.

The scene and any evidence has been secured for the Independent Investigation Office of BC (IIO BC) to investigate.
