The Kelowna RCMP will review the actions of an officer that were caught on camera during an arrest this weekend.
The incident happened around 12:30 am on Sunday when a tow truck driver reported that he had spotted a vehicle stolen from the company’s impound lot two days earlier.
Officers rushed to the scene around Ellis Street and Gaston Avenue and found a man inside the vehicle, who was informed as he exited the car that he was under arrest.
According to the RCMP, however, the man was uncooperative with the officer, actively resisted arrest and refused to show the officer his hands, choosing instead to clench them near his waistband.
Several backup officers assisted in taking the man into custody, but the video footage in question shows one officer striking the suspect as he tells him to put his hands on his head.
Once arrested, the suspect received medical treatment before being discharged and held in custody at the Kelowna RCMP detachment.
He has since been released from custody on conditions for a future court date.
Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy said that the RCMP is aware of the witness’ video footage.
“This file, and the actions of our officers, will be thoroughly reviewed through our internal processes,” she explained.
“We ask anyone who was a witness to this matter, or who has surveillance or video footage, to contact us immediately.”
