Members of the Kelowna RCMP were out for a pair of “large impaired driving check stops” on Saturday, May 20.
Officers stopped over 100 vehicles during the National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day initiative, but did not say where the check stops were.
According to police, five roadside driving suspensions were handed out due to impairment from drugs and two 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions were handed out as well.
The 90-day IRPs, which are given out when a driver’s blood alcohol content is over 0.08, come with a mandatory 30-day impound of the vehicle.
During this initiative, officers also seized a “significant amount” of illicit drugs and cash that are believed to be “associated to the street-level drug trade.”
Sgt. Mark Booth says impaired driving, more often than not, can result in catastrophic injuries or death and it’s something that is completely avoidable.
“If you plan on drinking and or consuming drugs, please call a friend or a cab and get home safe,” he pleaded. “You can expect to see our officers performing check stops and targeted enforcement throughout the summer.”
Booth added that everyone plays a role in stopping impaired driving and urged people to report incidents of suspected impaired driving to 911.
