A brood of little birdies can count themselves as lucky ducks after being rescued by local emergency crews on Victoria Day.
Kelowna Fire Department Engine Crew 1, with assistance from local RCMP and City of Kelowna workers, responded to a call to assist seven ducklings that had tumbled down a 15-foot deep storm drain.
Using a rope to bucket rescue contraption, the emergency crew members went belly down beside a storm drain along Burtch Road to hoist the ducks to freedom.
“These are those heart-lifting calls we really enjoy doing,” said the Kelowna Firefighters Instagram account in a post.
“Great job Engine 1 crew, Kelowna RCMP, and City of Kelowna utility crews for rescuing these baby ducks! And Special thanks to Sydney the animal rescuer.”
It's not the first time local emergency crews have performed such a rescue.
Back in 2017, two Kelowna firefighters used a fishing net to scoop a brood of ducklings who had become trapped in a similar predicament on Dilworth Mountain.
At the time, the firefighters said from cats to dogs, to turtles and ducks, almost every member of the platoon has an animal rescue story.
