Gas prices have risen significantly in Kelowna over the past few days.

They were a hair below $1.60 per litre earlier this week, but now you’d be hard pressed to find gas for less than $1.75 per litre.

According to GasBuddy, the price at the pumps for the majority of Kelowna gas stations is $174.9 per litre.

As expected, it is lower at Costco’s gas bar, reported at $1.69 per litre as recently as 9 am Friday.

It’s also cheaper at the Super Save Gas on Hwy 33 in Rutland, where the price is $1.73 per litre.

The price jump is unfortunately timed for travellers hitting the road for the long weekend today and there may not be much relief in the days and weeks to come.

On Monday, April 1, British Columbia’s carbon tax will increase from $65 a tonne to $80 a tonne for gasoline, which translates to a per-litre hike of a little over three cents.

With summer approaching, when gas prices are typically higher, drivers could be in for some shocking bills at the pumps in the months to come.
