Students at Immaculata Regional High School have set a lofty goal for their fifth annual Christmas Turkey Drive in support of the Central Okanagan Food Bank.
They want to collect at least 250 turkeys to supplement the estimated 2,200 needed to fill food hampers this holiday season.
Immaculata students will be accepting both turkey and monetary donations on campus between 6:30-10 am on Friday.
“One of the primary goals of Immaculata Regional High School is to foster social awareness and a commitment to community service in our students,” explained Principal Rob Plaxton.
“We are once again proud to host this event in support of the Central Okanagan Food Bank during their lead up to the Christmas season, while in turn helping local families who are in need.”
There are more and more families relying on local food banks and that holds true in the Valley, as the Central Okanagan Food Bank reports an 19% increase in visits over the last year.
That demand has amped up recently, as there has been a 12% increase in families accessing the food bank locally during the fall.
“We currently provide food assistance to 4,500 individuals each month, 34% of which are children and youth and 20% are seniors living on a fixed income,” noted Tammie Watson from the Central Okanagan Food Bank.
The school asks that all turkey donations be frozen birds, but the monetary donations help just as much.
