Kelowna’s Taco Time resisting imminent Starbucks takeover

A longstanding Kelowna business is not shutting its doors without a fight. 

Taco Time, located on the corner of Highway 97 and Leckie Road, has launched a social media campaign in response to news that the location will soon become a Starbucks. 

“Is a cup of coffee worth more than 40 years of tacos?” states a campaign video. 

In June, Kelowna city council approved a development permit that paved the way for Starbucks to overtake the corner lot. 

Once open, it will be the 15th Starbucks franchise in Kelowna. 

However, Taco Time’s owners have gone public with a petition that states they're being forced out. 

“Never missed a lease payment and always been a great tenant,” reads the petition

“But overnight there was a demolition clause in the lease that the property management company is trying to enforce. So what does that mean? Well for someone who has been in that location for 40 years it means get out so they can tear down the building and replace it with a proposed StarBucks.”

The petition continues to say “Longstanding businesses deserve more than a pat on the back and a kick in the butt from corporations that aren’t part of your community.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition had gathered nearly 700 signatures.

It looks like the fired conductor and Okanagan Symphony have kissed and made up
