Kelowna’s downtown waterfront will continue to evolve over the next few years.

Plans have been unveiled for a high-end waterfront bistro, which will be be built alongside the city’s new visitor’s centre at the foot of Bernard Avenue.

As a result of the new restaurant, Kelowna’s iconic Spirit of Sail monument will be moved.

“This was a last resort,” explained city manager Kole Dube-Foote, the replacement for Ron Mattiussi. “The Sails have been a staple of the Kelowna waterfront in that location since 1978, but the proposal for this bistro was too impressive to pass on.”

The decision on exactly where to move the Sails hasn’t been made yet, but a few potential locations have been discussed.

One is the top of Knox Mountain, an idea inspired by iconic statues in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Lisbon, Portugal.

Another interesting idea brought up to city councillors is to move the Sails onto a floating platform in Okanagan Lake

The final idea is to keep the Sails in the same location, but install them on top of the new bistro, which will fittingly be called ‘The Sails Bistro.’

“If it comes to that, we would be absolutely honoured to display the Sails on top of our establishment,” said Harland David Sanders, owner of the bistro.

“We want to slide right in and become a natural part of Kelowna’s downtown core, and what better way to do that then sitting under one of the city’s most famous landmarks.”

Although the restaurant is two years away, with a hopeful opening date of April 1, 2020, Sanders wasn’t shy in revealing a sneak peek at the menu.

The bistro will feature all vegan hors d'oeuvres, an extensive sushi menu, all you can eat chicken strips and 100 different kinds of wheatgrass smoothies.
