A Kelowna man is heading to the nation’s capital to be honoured by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Michael Ross, a teacher at Okanagan Mission Secondary School, has been awarded a Prime Minister’s Award for teaching excellence.
He’ll head to Ottawa to receive his Certificate of Excellence from Trudeau at a special awards ceremony on May 28.
Ross does great work in the classroom, but also teaches his students to build community and find their place in the world through a comprehensive outdoor experiences program.
This adds things like hiking glaciers and sailing tall ships to the high school curriculum, fostering social and emotional growth.
"Mr. Ross's ability to invoke curiosity, build communities and inspire change is incomparable,” reads a statement from the former students who nominated him for this award.
“Through his teaching and mentorship, he has opened doors for countless students to discover their passions and, in doing so, has left a permanent mark on their lives."
His teaching approach has been described as going beyond a pass or fail mentality and targets every student’s desire to learn.
Along with the Certificate of Excellence, Ross will receive a cash prize of $5,000 for his achievement.
