A Kelowna team has raised more than $9,000 after paddling on Lake Okanagan for 24 hours straight.

The Kelowna Paddle Centre fundraiser exceeded its target by over $2,000 during this year’s The 24 event.

Thirteen members of the team paddled relay-style from 8 a.m. on April 13 to 8 a.m. on April 14.

The cash raised will be put into nine envelopes and handed out to local families affected by cancer.

It can be spent on whatever the family or individual needs.

Tom Maxwell, one of the team members, has personal experience with the disease.

“Cancer has been in my family,” he said. “I know how hard it is for people to deal with.”

The weather was initially calm on the lake but a storm developed around midnight and forced one crew to head for land.

They later made up their time, however.

“It was tough, but 100% rewarding,” said Maxwell. “I would do it again, but it was definitely a challenge.

The paddlers were: Tamlyn Bohm, Christine Castrucow, Mel Durban, Jeff Fink, Kale McMahon, Tom Maxwell, Aly Marson, Sally Wallick, Alex Quintans, Sheila Strother, Kathy Montgomery, Sharon Taylor and Greg Redman.
