Merritt was just one of four kittens who was found living under a townhome in Prince George when a good samaritan stepped in to bring the litter into the BC SPCA.
When the kittens arrived at the shelter they were all underweight, dehydrated, lethargic and weren’t eating. Merritt also had a very cloudy eye.
The fur babies have been monitored carefully and while two of the four have been adopted in Prince George, Merritt and her bonded sister Hope were transferred to the Kelowna BC SPCA for further care.
Merritt has a corneal ulcer in her left eye and the vets have deemed that scar tissue is only going to get worse.
“When Merritt arrived at the shelter we hoped there was enough blood supply to her eye to make it viable,” says Sean Hogan, manager, BC SPCA Kelowna.
“Unfortunately the scar tissue that has developed on her eye was restricting blood flow and the tissue was beginning to die so she required surgery to have the eye removed.”
The BC SPCA is hoping to raise funds that will help cover the kitten’s surgery, medication, treatment and regular health checks.
While the fur baby will require months of ongoing care to recover, she’ll still have her sister by her side in the meantime.
“Merritt is a sweet kitten who is playful and cuddly,” says Hogan.
“She is bonded to her sister Hope and we will be looking for a home for both of them once Merritt has recovered from her surgery.”
