Kelowna city council has unanimously approved an application to make the beach access at Lake Avenue an off-leash dog beach.

The beach has operated as a dog beach for the past two years as part of a trial, with the results being presented to council on Monday.

Public feedback, water quality testing, dog control and community policing all came back with positive reviews following the two-year trial, leading councillors to easily approve the continued use of the beach by dogs.

"I am not surprised, I would suggest we give 'paws' for thought that we have more," said Coun. Charlie Hodge, in a pun-filled observation.

"I think it’s time that we looked at where the next two or three dog beaches could be."

Coun. Luke Stack admitted he was nervous at first about allowing dogs at Lake Ave, however, he confirmed he's been "pleasantly surprised" by the trial's results.

Kelowna's newest dog beach will also see some upgrades before next summer, including better fencing, improved signage, and the addition of a doggie bag dispenser.

The city does have three other dog-friendly beach locations at Cedar Creek Park, Poplar Point Drive and the Downtown Sails on Bernard Avenue as a cooling-off beach.
