The BC government has approved a retail cannabis store for Lake Country.

On Wednesday, cannabis company Starbuds announced its application for a store located in the Turtle Bay Crossing shopping plaza has been given the green light.

Lake Country first approved Starbuds’ application in December, however, getting through the provincial red tape proved to be a lengthy process.

Operators will now begin the process of stocking the store in anticipation of opening its doors later this month.

"The Okanagan is home, so opening a store here was really important for us," said Dan Winer, Director of Marketing with Starbuds.

"It's been proven that opening retail cannabis stores is the fastest route to displacing the black market. We can't wait to open our doors to the community!"

Starbuds has one cannabis store up and running in Dawson Creek and one application pending provincial approval in Kelowna.

However, despite being the first provincially approved store the Central Okanagan, Starbuds is technically not the first retail cannabis store in Lake Country.

Indigenous Bloom, located on Okanagan Indian Band land on Commonwealth Road just off of Highway 97, has been selling cannabis since January.

BC has now approved a grand total of 25 cannabis stores in the province, well behind Alberta's count of 176 stores.
