A new rental housing project is destined for a future public hearing.

On Monday, Kelowna city council gave first reading to three separate five-storey apartment buildings that would inject 169 rental units on Benvoulin Court.

Those units will range in size from bachelor to two-bedroom units.

The project includes 164 stalls of underground parking along with 90 at-grade parking stalls on the west side of the property.

Mayer Road will be extended along the north property line to provide separate access to the project's third building.

"I’m never in favour of rezoning agricultural land for housing, but this is a perfect spot for development like this," councillor Mohini Singh.

Councillor Maxine DeHart, questioned how the development unit may require the construction of traffic lights due to increased residents.

"The intention is to move to signalization but not at this time," said city planner Lydia Korolchuk. "It will be right in and right out on Meyer Rd."

A public hearing date for the project has yet to be announced.
