Despite a push from Kelowna’s development staff to nix a public hearing, residents will now have their chance to speak on a proposal calling for 77 town homes on Kirschner Mountain.
On Monday, May 25, Kelowna city councillors overviewed a first reading for the project that’s intended for a 4.05-hectare lot off Loseth Road.
Several councillors and mayor Colin Basran raised concerns regarding the lack of a public hearing, which planners had intended to skip due to COVID-19 restrictions at City Hall.
“I realize we’re in interesting times, but City Hall has received multiple correspondence letters regarding the project so this really should go to public hearing,” said councillor Mohini Singh.
Both councillors Luke Stack and Charlie Hodge commented on the significant visual proponents of the project, with Stack expressing concern over how crowded the development could be.
"The proposed amendments would allow for a medium density of units in a series of multi-family buildings. Staff believe that the proposal fits within the surrounding Kirschner Mountain neighbourhood and allows for a mix of housing types in the area," reads the report to council.
As a result of council's request, the public hearing is now set for Tuesday, June 23.
