(UPDATE: May 11, 2018 @ 3:50 p.m.)

A lengthy section of the Mission Creek Greenway will be closed starting Monday morning at 6 a.m. until further notice while crews raise sections of the Greenway dike.

Last year, almost 600 truckloads of material was deposited, raising the dike flood protection along approximately 2.5 kilometers of the Greenway between KLO and Casorso Roads.

“In order to raise the level of the dike in several areas, just over four kilometers of the Greenway recreational trail will be completely closed from the Lakeshore Road entrance upstream to KLO Road," says Bruce Smith of the RDCO. "This work is being done in an effort to enhance the flood protection provided by the dike.  Heavy equipment and dump trucks will be accessing the trail in order to increase the height of sections of the dike and trail that can use the additional reinforcement.”

The Greenway from KLO Road upstream to the Hollywood Road south entrance will not be affected and will remain open for use.

Phase 2 of the trail from Hollywood Road to Field Road in East Kelowna remains closed due to erosion caused by the high level and flow of Mission Creek earlier this week.   Once the safety of workers can be assured, they will begin repairs in order to get this section of the Greenway open again.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this closure and for their safety we encourage residents to stay out of these closed areas while crews proactively work on this flood mitigation project," says Smith.

A section of the Mission Creek Greenway has been closed due to the rapid rise in the water level and flow of Mission Creek.

“Until conditions return to a safe level and it’s safe for our staff to assess trail conditions, the complete Phase 2 section of the Greenway corridor is closed from the Hollywood Road south entrance of Scenic Canyon Regional Park to the end of the trail off Field Road,” says Bruce Smith, Regional District Communications Officer.

“The north creekside section of the Greenway along Phase 1 from Lakeshore through Mission Creek Regional Park and the south trail between Lakeshore and Casorso Road are still open.  We’re urging people to use extreme caution and keep away from the banks due to slippery conditions, possible erosion and the potential for a rapid rise in water levels and increased flow resulting from the overnight and forecast rainfall.”

The Greenway trail underpass at the Casorso Road bridge remains closed.  Pedestrians and cycles are asked to use caution and only cross Casorso Road when it is safe.  Motorists are also asked to watch for Greenway users who may be crossing the road in this area while the underpass is close
