COVID-19 restrictions are easing up, but people have still spent a lot of time at home since March.

For most, it’s a minor inconvenience, or even a blessing, but the Kelowna Women’s Safety Initiative (KWSI) says that home is not the safest place for many.

“One in three women report experiencing intimate partner violence in their lifetime,” says a release from the organization.

“The World Health Organization reports a worldwide increase in rates of intimate partner violence since the onset of the pandemic. Our community is no exception.”

A lot of women may be isolated with limited access to help and arguably the most important resource for them is the Kelowna’s Women’s Shelter (KWS).

The KWS has been supporting survivors of violence, along with their children, in our community for 40 years and after losing important revenue during the pandemic, they need help as well.

The KWSI, which is run by a group of UBC medical student volunteers, is raising funds for the KWS through a month-long silent auction.

Local businesses, artists and artisans and generously donated more than $1,800 worth of items that can be bid on until June 30.

You are also welcome to donate directly to the campaign.
