Kelowna city council has approved plans for a YMCA child care centre on Dilworth Mountain.

On Monday, the two-storey child care centre received the green light from city councillors who were happy to approve the project.

“Expansion of child care throughout our communities is something that's in great demand and really needed," said councillor Luke Stack.

"I know the YMCA has been trying to find an appropriate site and it's very encouraged to hear that this area will work."

The new centre will sit at the corner of Dilworth and Summit Drive and feature an outdoor play centre in the northwest corner of the building.

If both levels of the building are used for childcare, the centre will have capactiy for 124 children between the ages of zero and 12, plus eight employees.

However, if only one level of the building is used for childcare, that number dips to 50 children plus eight employees.

School District No. 23 owns the lot, which sits adjacent to the Dilworth Soccer fields and will provide more parking space for those that use the fields in the spring and fall.

The project is expected to be completed by early 2021.
