Two RCMP officers suffered minor injuries the night of Thursday, June 17 while arresting a violent suspect.

The statement claims that a front line officer, who was patrolling the 3000-block of 27th St. Vernon, located a man who is known to have several outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Just before 6 pm, the officer approached and informed the man he was under arrest. As the officer attempted to take control, the man began to physically resist the arrest.

The statement continues by stating that a woman, who was accompanying the suspect, began to assault the officer while the male discharged bear spray into the officer’s face.

A second officer arrived on scene to offer assistance and both officers were struck several times by the female suspect.

Finally, a BC sheriff and City of Vernon employee stepped in to help the two officers gain control of the two suspects.

“The officer did an outstanding job managing the effects of the bear spray and both subjects, ultimately maintaining control of the situation until assistance arrived,” said Cst. Christ Terleski.

“Thankfully, neither of our officers sustained serious injuries during the assault and we want to extend our appreciation to the two individuals who came to the aid of our officers during this incident.”

The 21 year old female suspect was released from custody while the 25 year old male remains in custody and faces a number of potential criminal charges.

Both are from Vernon, known to police and this incident remains under investigation.
