A petition opposing a proposed Rogers cell phone tower in Kelowna’s Ellison neighborhood is beginning to pick up steam.

The 18-metre-high tower is reportedly being built off of Old Vernon Road, less than 400 metres from Ellison Elementary School and in close proximity to several homes.

According to the petition, such close proximity to a cell phone tower can pose long-term health effects to developing children and could have a negative impact on property values.

“The owner of the Old Vernon property has decided on a location as far from their house as possible, which lands in the back yards of homes located on Weston Road,” states the petition.

“Ground preparations have already begun!”

The petition adds that only 15 registered letters were sent out to homeowners, all of which fall within a 105-meter radius of the proposed tower.

"Staff at Ellison Elementary were also not consulted and were unaware, that all other parents at Ellison Elementary don’t have a say on the situation or the potential health risks their children will be exposed to."

Several residents who have signed the petition have also left comments highlighting their concerns.

"I have Rogers and have 5 bars don't need one there try Glenmore where I lose calls," wrote Brian Gibbons.

"My children and grandchildren live here and long term health problems have been proven," said Christine Ritchey.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the petition had gathered over 200 signatures.
